FAQ’s

What is the definition of a Curling Club member? • All curlers who have registered in a league at a curling club, and paid the Individual Curler Fee, are deemed eligible to compete for that curling club at the Club Championships, if they’ve also met all Curling Canada eligibility requirements for the category.

Do I have to play with a team all year to be eligible? • No, teams now only need to be members of the same curling club and meet all other Curling Alberta and Curling Canada eligibility requirements.

I have a 5+ person team, can they play any position? • Yes

What is the difference between a 5th player and an alternate? • For the purpose of Curling Alberta competitions, they are the same thing.

What is the difference between a substitute and an alternate? • Substitutes are temporary players, replacing a player on a game-by-game basis and may be a different substitute each game. Alternates are considered a rostered player and must be the same person for all levels of the event.

Do alternates/substitutes need to be from the club that my team is representing? • Yes, alternates/substitutes must also be an active member in good standing of your curling club and may play any position.

If my team signs up an alternate, are we allowed to also use a substitute? • No, if a team names an alternate for the event, a substitute cannot be used.

Can I change my line-up between qualifiers and provincials? • Positions between the events may change but the curlers must remain the same.

Our club has both Men’s teams and Women’s teams, can I register and pay for them together? • No, unfortunately the Curling IO program is set up to register each team separately. Two private links will be emailed to the clubs, one for the Men’s teams and one for the Women’s teams.

Can a junior aged team compete in the Club Championships. • No, a minimum of two (2) players must be a minimum of nineteen (19) years of age or over as of December 31st immediately prior to the national championships.

Are sticks allowed? • Yes

Are wheelchairs allowed? • Yes

Do all team members need Curler Profiles? • Yes, Curler Profiles are a part of the registration process, are linked to the

Curling Alberta waiver and are also a part of the online scoring.

Do all team members need to accept a Curling Alberta Waiver? • Yes, it is mandatory for all curlers to accept the Curling Alberta waiver in their Curler Profiles before they are allowed to step on the ice.
